Rosehill Racecourse is located in close proximity to the City of Parramatta. Parramatta is renowned as a thriving modern city in New South Wales, is steeped in history, having the richest collection of heritage buildings in the country, dating back to the early colonial days. Modern venues such as the Riverside Theatres and its proximity to the Sydney Olympic Park mark Parramatta as both an artistic and sporting hub.

Parramatta was settled in November 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip, making it the second British settlement in Australia. It has proudly kept the the name bestowed by its original Indigenous Burramatta people who traditionally occupied the area at the head of the Parramatta River.

Parramatta's vibrant multicultural community combined with its elegant open spaces, restaurants, historical buildings, churches and shopping centres make it a city ranking high in the list of Australian places to explore. Parramatta is demographically and geographically the centre of Sydney, situated between Sydney city and the magnificent Blue Mountains.

History and Culture...

  • The current population of Parramatta is 144,000. It is known as Sydney’s second city.
  • The area was settled in November 1788 by Governor Arthur Philip. A year after settlement the area had a population of 100 people.
  • Steeped in colonial history, it was the site where Governor Philip built the first gaol!
  • The oldest house in Australia is also found in Parramatta: Elizabeth Farm Cottage, which is currently a museum.
  • Australia’s first grain was cultivated in Parramatta by James Ruse.
  • It was also the site of the first orchard, vineyard, winery, brewery and tannery.
  • The colony’s first manufacturing industry was developed in Parramatta where convict women worked spinning and weaving wool.
  • Parramatta was the site of the only successful large-scale convict rebellion in Australia's colonial past. This was the rebellion of 1804 that led to the "Battle of Vinegar Hill" in Sydney's northwestern suburbs. The New South Wales Corps had marched all night and most of the next morning from Sydney in order to catch the rebels outside of Rouse Hill. A short battle was fought which ended the rebellion.

  • Not only famous for its history, Parramatta is home to motor sports such as sprint car, speed car, and fender bender racing!
  • The area is also home of the Parramatta Eels rugby league club.
  • The RoseHill Gardens is home to the Golden Slipper Festival, the world's richest race for 2 year old thoroughbreds.
